VARDZIA-RABATI-KHERTVISI Khertvisi fortress is one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia and was functional throughout the Georgian feudal period. It is situated in Khertvisi village of Aspindza Municipality, Southern Georgia, in Meskheti region. The fortress was first mentioned in the 10th-11th centuries.[1] The church was built in 985, and the present walls were built in 1354. According to a local legend, Khertvisi was once destroyed by Alexander the Great, though it has then been reconstructed and invaded on numerous occasions through the centuries. In Aspindza district, there is one of the most significant monuments of Georgian history – Vardzia complex. The unique cave complex was cut in a rock massive. It consisted of 600 rooms approximately and was located on 5, 7 and 13 levels. The construction of the cave city was started during the king George the III and finished during his daughter’s reign - Tamara the Greatе. The complex has great architectural solution. From the rooms carved in the rock the next ones should be noticed: queen Tamara’s chambers, halls, pharmacy, refectory, numerous of storages, wine cellar and etc. Vardzia had a function of the fort, where local population could hide during wars and attacks. But together with that the cave complex was the greatest cultural center of the epoch. It is known, that during its prosperity Vardzia had 15 monasteries.
